Call For Justice & Vigil for Women of Color Lost to State Violence
Friday, July 24th, nearly 200 protesters from various parts of New York State converged on Dana Park in Albany for CAAMI’s CALL FOR JUSTICE & VIGIL FOR WOMEN OF COLOR LOST TO STATE VIOLENCE. This public action was a direct response to the recent deaths of Sandra Bland, Kimberlee King, Kindra Chapman, Mya Hall, and all women of color whose deaths stemmed from police violence.
Participants placed items on a make-shift altar and recited the names of several victims (#SayHerName). As protesters took over the park, a transcript of Sandra Bland’s thoughts (taken from her video blog) were recited and songs of solidarity were sung. Names of the deceased were then written in chalk on the sidewalk and surrounding areas (#WriteHerName). Several police officers observed from their vehicles, but did not intervene.
The protest concluded without incident, and many participants requested and subsequently received information on how they may contribute to the movement at large.
