Justice for Dontay Community Gathering
The day following the police tasing death of longtime Albany resident, Donald “Dontay” Ivy (39), Capital Area Against Mass Incarceration held a rally demanding justice for his murder, and the immediate disarming of the police.
Friday evening more than 200 protesters gathered on Arch Street in front of the Albany Police Department’s South Station, before marching to City Hall. For the entirety of the demonstration, protesters spoke passionately of their grievances with the police and the pain felt from of losing another community member to police violence. In addition to providing an outlet for frustrated residents and friends of Dontay, the rally was meant to put pressure on the Albany Police and the Department of Justice—who have yet to release details about why Dontay was stopped, and how many times he was tased.
The rally concluded without incident and protesters were encouraged to attend an upcoming Community Safety Teach-In and Common Council meeting the following Monday. As of the time of this writing, details surrounding Dontay’s death have not been released.
